Natural Supports for Thyroid Health During Pregnancy

Thyroid disease is clinically diagnosed by your primary physician through lab testing and clinical presentation.


Low TSH, high T3 and T4

  • Primary Hyperthyroidism - Graves' disease, multinodular goitre, toxic nodule, postpartum lymphocytic, postviral thyroid disease

  • Clinical Sign: Weight loss, increased appetite, goiter, palpitations, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, irregular bowel movements, trouble tolerating heat


Low TSH, normal T3 and T4

  • Subclinical hyperthyroidism

  • Clinical Signs: Weight loss,  increased appetite, goiter, palpitations, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, irregular bowel movements, trouble tolerating heat


Low/ normal TSH, low T3 and T4

  • Non-thyroid illness or you are being treated for hyperthyroidism

  • Clinical Sign: Weight loss, increased appetite, goiter, palpitations, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, irregular bowel movements, trouble tolerating heat


High TSH, low T3 and T4

  • Clinical autoimmune thyroiditis, post radioiodine, post thyroidectomy, transient thyroiditis

  • Clinical Signs will depend on the autoimmune condition you have


High TSH, normal T3 and T4

  • Subclinical autoimmune hypothyroidism

  • Clinical Signs: Fatigue, unexplained weight gain, constiparion, unable to tolerate cold temperatures, dry coarse hair, depression, heavy menstrual bleeding


High/normal TSH, High T3/T4

  • Interfering antibodies to thyroid hormone, use of amiodarone, autoimmune conditions

  • Clinical signs will depend on the autoimmune condition you have


Autoimmune antibodies may also be tested to see if you have an autoimmune disease: This may include anti-TPO, anti-TG, TSI, and LATS


Risks of Autoimmune Disease


Unmanaged thyroid disease during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, preterm labor, placental abruption, heart failure, thyroid storm, stillbirth, low birth weight, fetal goiter & thyroid disease.


Pharmaceutical medications can also cause increased risk to mother and fetus during pregnancy. Please contact your healthcare practitioner if you are taking medications and are looking to become pregnant, in 1st - 3rd trimester, or are breastfeeding.


Some natural supplements used to treat thyroid health can be harmful to the baby whilst being pregnant, or when you are breastfeeding. Below is attached


Natural treatments for Hyperthyroidism

  • Diet: Food rich in iodine (dark leafy greens, dairy, eggs, meat, poultry, iodinized salt, limited amounts of safe pregnancy seafood), Gluten-free / dairy free diet

  • Botanicals: Lemon balm

  • Supplements: Iodine, L-Carnitine, Selenium, vitamin D

  • Lifestyle: Reducing stress and anxiety, being physically active, adequate amount of sleep, removing toxic exposure


Natural Treatments for Hypothyroidism

  • Diet: Food rich in iodine (dark leafy greens, dairy, eggs, meat, poultry, iodinized salt, limited amounts of safe pregnancy seafood), Gluten-free/ dairy-free diet, coconut oil, healthy fats, ginger

  • Botanicals: Ashwagandha

  • Supplements: Iodine, Selenium, probiotics, Vitamin B complex, L-tyrosine

  • Lifestyle: Reducing stress and anxiety, being physically active, adequate amount of sleep, removing toxic exposure
